There are a number of sleep apnea appliances that can be made to help patients overcome the difficulty of obstructive sleep apnea. There is no one appliance that will work for everyone. Each appliance has advantages and disadvantages and needs to be tailored to fit the needs of the individual patient. These appliances can help the symptoms such as snoring and allow patients to get a restful nights sleep. No appliance should be made for a patient without a sleep study to determine the extent of the apnea. Appliances are made for patients based on the result of the study. These appliances should not be taken lightly, for if they are used improperly, a patient's bite can change, teeth can move and a smile can change and these may be difficult to correct. Many side effects from the disease are important as well as the treatments. Patients need to be informed about the obstructive sleep apnea and the different modes of treatment at the beginning.
