As we celebrated this wonderful 4th of July weekend, I thought about how lucky we are to live in this country along with the importance and significance of this holiday. On a personal note, I reflected on how families celebrate and the risk of eye injury which can occur through all of our exciting parties and celebrations.
Over the years, we have seen swimming pool accidents, trauma from "noodles" in the pools, surface corneal abrasions from sparklers and loss of eyes from more blunt trauma secondary to the more powerful fireworks. I personally love all the celebrations and the glory and importance of our holiday. We want our patients, family and friends to have great joy during this time along with being safe.
I hope everyone enjoyed the holiday, family and friends along with all the "hoopla" which goes with the 4th of July. During this time, always use good common sense and the appropriate eye protection.
Remember, protect those eyes!!
