I can really sympathize with overweight children. Today another teacher overheard a conversation at lunch between two kids. I didn't catch everything that took place but I got the gist of what happened: a 4th grade boy who is overweight gets teased by the kids in his class. He was nicknamed a character from the "I Carly" show who is also overweight. The student came to school today very sad because he's being teased. Luckily the teacher heard the two kids making fun of him and immediately gave out consequences for their ridicule. It literally hurts my heart to hear kids being teased like this. It seems like eventually you would get older and "grow out" of the teasing. But, I can assure you that while you may move on and have a happy life you will most likely never forget those harsh words; even at the young age of 4th grade.
I can still hear another boy in 3rd grade say to the teacher, "Ewww I don't want to be her partner." When another student later asked why he whispered, "Because she's fat." I was devestated when I heard him say that. I do have a happy life and I try to get past mean comments like that but it's situations like the 4th grader at our school that make me reflect on the fat comments from my childhood and my heart really goes out to these kids. I think this is why I'm so passionate about childhood obesity and what we can do to improve the lives of our kids today. I want them to develop and be taught good eating habits now because it is certainly much more difficult to change what you eat as an adult.
